Know more about the skincare trend. Facekini gains popularity in China

As the heatwave reaches record-breaking levels in the Northern Hemisphere, with temperatures remaining above 35 degrees Celsius in China, protecting one’s skin from the sun has become a hot topic in the country. As such, a popular sun protection gear called facekini is being sought after. In addition to this, people in China are also buying hats with built-in fans and arm sleeves for added protection. According to Devji Hathiyani, Skincare expert and co-founder, Dr Rashel, Facekini is a mask designed to cover the face while leaving the eyes, nose and mouth unobstructed, similar to the balaclavas used in winter. It originated from China’s Qingdao City, a popular beach destination. Dr Vipul Nanda, Chief- Cosmetic & Plastic Surgery, Artemis Hospital, Gurgaon said that Facekinis can provide some level of UV protection to the areas of the face that have been covered. “The fabric used in these face coverings acts as a barrier against the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, helping to shield the skin from potential sunburns and damage,” he said, adding that it is important to consider that the level of protection may vary depending on the fabric’s material and thickness. However, Dr Nanda noted that the practicality of facekinis depends on individual preferences and situations. “While they can be a good option for individuals with sensitive skin or those who prefer physical barriers to chemical sunscreens, they might not be suitable for all occasions. The masks can feel hot and uncomfortable in extreme temperatures, and they may also limit facial expressions and communication. Besides this, proper hygiene and maintenance are essential when using them to prevent skin problems and maintain overall skin health.” Although the intention behind the facekini trend may be to protect skin from harmful UV rays, Dr Gitika A Biyani – Dermatology, Cosmetology & Trichology Specialist, Dr L H Hiranandani Hospital, Powai, Mumbai recommends a comprehensive approach to sun protection. While facekinis can provide some sun protection, it is important to consider potential problems. Long-term use of facekinis can cause skin rashes, sweating and breathing problems, and can aggravate existing skin conditions or create new ones. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with the right SPF, seeking shade when the sun is bright, wearing safe clothing and using a wide-brimmed hat are all important steps to protect skin from sun damage. Apply sunscreen generously to all sun-exposed skin areas including the face and neck, every 3-4 hours.
