What are the early signs of type 2 diabetes?

Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar (glucose). It often develops gradually, and some people may not show obvious symptoms for many years. However, there are some early signs and symptoms that may indicate the presence of type 2 diabetes. It's important to note that these symptoms can be subtle, and not everyone with type 2 diabetes will experience all of them. If you notice any of the following signs, it's advisable to consult with a healthcare professional for proper evaluation and diagnosis: Increased thirst and frequent urination: Excessive thirst (polydipsia) and frequent urination (polyuria) are common early signs of diabetes. Unexplained weight loss: Despite an increase in appetite, some people with type 2 diabetes may experience unexplained weight loss. This is often due to the body's inability to u...

Signs You’re Low on Vitamin B12

Numbness Do your hands, feet, or legs feel like they’re on “pins and needles”? Shortage of B12 can damage the protective sheath that covers your nerves. Diseases like celiac, Crohn’s, or other gut illnesses may make it harder for your body to absorb the vitamin. So can taking some heartburn drugs. You’re Colder Than Usual Without enough B12, you might not have enough healthy red blood cells to move oxygen around your body (anemia). That can leave you shivering and cold, especially in your hands and feet. Brain Fog A lack of B12 may lead to depression, confusion, memory problems, and dementia. It also can affect your balance. B12 supplements are usually safe. For adults, doctors recommend 2.4 micrograms a day. If you take more than what you need, your body passes the rest out through your pee. Still, high doses could have some side effects, like dizziness, headache, anxiety, nausea, and vomiting. Weakness Your muscles may lack strength. You also might feel tired or lightheaded. Your d...

Livers have a cumulative age of at least 100 years

There is a small, but growing, subset of livers that have been transplanted and have a cumulative age of more than 100 years, according to researchers from University of Texas (UT) Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, and TransMedics, Andover, Massachusetts. They studied these livers to identify characteristics to determine why these organs are so resilient, paving the way for considering the potential expanded use of older liver donors. For these centurion livers, the average donor age was significantly higher, 84.7 years compared with 38.5 years for non-centurion liver transplants. The researchers noted that for a liver to make it to 100, they expected to find an older average donor age as well as healthier donors. Notably, the donors from the centurion group had lower incidence of diabetes and fewer donor infections. There are 11,113 patients on liver transplant waiting list as of September 22, 2022. As Dr. Hwang noted, using older liver donors more often could potentially expand th...

What is corona virus

A coronavirus is a kind of common virus that causes an infection in your nose, sinuses, or upper throat. Most coronaviruses aren't dangerous. In early 2020, after a December 2019 outbreak in China, the World Health Organization identified SARS-CoV-2 as a new type of coronavirus. The outbreak quickly spread around the world. COVID-19 is a disease caused by SARS-CoV-2 that can trigger what doctors call a respiratory tract infection. It spreads the same way other coronaviruses do, mainly through person-to-person contact. Infections range from mild to deadly. SARS-CoV-2 is one of seven types of coronavirus, including the ones that cause severe diseases like Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) and sudden acute respiratory syndrome (SARS). The other coronaviruses cause most of the colds that affect us during the year but aren't a serious threat for otherwise healthy people. An early Chinese study of 103 COVID-19 cases found two strains, which they named L and S. The S type is old...
