AVM (arteriovenous malformation) is a medical disorder characterized by a misconnection of arteries and veins that leads to swelling of blood vessels in the brain or spine. It can also affect other organs like hands, feet. Dr. Aditya Gupta, director of cyberknife surgery at Artemis Hospital Gurugram, says that the main function of the arteries is to carry oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the brain. Veins bring deoxygenated blood back to the lungs and heart. When an AVM affects this process, the surrounding tissue does not get enough oxygen, and the affected arteries and veins become weak. If this type of problem occurs in the brain, then it can also cause death because there is a risk of excessive bleeding in the brain, which can lead to stroke, brain hemorrhage. He said however,
Signs and Symptoms of AVM
In the case of a brain AVM, there are no signs or symptoms until it ruptures, causing bleeding in the brain . However, some people feel some symptoms of AVM apart from bleedding in the brain, so do not ignore them when symptoms appear, otherwise they can cause a big problem. Some of the common symptoms that occur according to the location of AVM in the brain are-
Severe pain on one side of the head
Weakness, numbness or paralysis attack
Difficulty in speaking and weak eyesight
Seizures or effects of epilepsy
Confusion and instability
Dr. Aditya Gupta says that although this problem can be born to someone, but such problems also arise in the later stage of life. There are different reasons for this. He said that age- usually the symptoms of brain AVM can develop at any age but mainly they are more visible between the age of 10-45. Over time, if ignored or untreated, AVMs damage brain tissue and the damage continues to grow.
He said that gender-many studies and reports have revealed that the problem of brain AVM is more in men than in women. In addition, AVMs have been reported to run within families, but the reasons for genetic factors are still unclear. It can be assumed that problems like AVM can be passed down through the generations of the family.
Diagnosis and treatment of AVM
High resolution MRI is much better for detecting brain AVMs. After this, the lesion is examined in detail through cerebral angiography. In this test a special dye called contrast agent is used which is injected into the artery. This dye is used to highlight blood vessels to make them show up better on X-rays .
Embolization along with surgery is considered the best technique for treating AVM. But sometimes due to the complex location and size of AVM, surgery requires a lot of expertise and skill. However, AVMs usually cannot be cured in one go, requiring treatment in several sessions.
How is this surgery done
Cyberknife radiation surgery reduces the risk of AVM haemorrhage. In this, a high dose of radiation is given to shrink the AVM. In this procedure, high frequency radiation is given from different directions with the help of latest image guidance technology and computer assisted robotic system. Another advantage is that the guided missile automatically detects any movement inside the patient so that the radiation beam is directed to the right location and the treatment can be done in the right way.
During the treatment, the robotic arm slowly moves around the patient and the patient does not feel anything. The patient remains completely normal. In this way there is a session which lasts for about 30 minutes.
how safe is this treatment
This treatment is completely painless and 100% safe, it does not have any side effects. It also does not require the use of anesthesia, nor is any other material applied to the head for stability, as is used in traditional methods such as the Gamma Knife. In 99% cases, patients get cured in a single session and become normal soon after the treatment.
In 90% of patients, the AVM disappears three years after CyberKnife radiosurgery. This gradual and step-by-step elimination of AVM is actually very safe for the body.
Sometimes the AVM remains with bleeding or sometimes its size is small and it is on the surface of the brain. Microsurgical procedure is the best option in such cases, which provides immediate relief.
