Prediabetes is considered dangerous not just because it increases the risk of developing diabetes, but prediabetic people also have an increased risk of life-threatening health problems like heart attack and stroke, explains Dr. Aishwarya Krishnamurthy. According to Dr. Aishwarya, people whose body weight has increased excessively or those who are completely obese, they may have the problem of pre-diabetes sooner. Apart from this, people who have diabetes in their body before or those who have a bad lifestyle, they are also more at risk of getting prediabetes.
Possible prevention of prediabetes
Dr Aishwarya further added that the best part is that prediabetes is preventable and diabetes can also be prevented from developing. Prediabetes can be prevented by following some general precautions. These precautions are as follows -
Lose body weight - Losing 5 to 7 percent of your total body weight can reduce the risk of pre-diabetes to a great extent. For example, if you weigh 70 kg, losing 3 to 5 kg can go a long way in preventing prediabetes.
Regular Physical Activity - Make sure to include exercise in your daily routine. Getting 30 minutes of exercise a day at least 5 days a week can reduce your risk of developing prediabetes. Also, taking the stairs instead of the lift, not using a car or bike for short walks, etc. will also help in your physical activity plan.
Improvement in Diet Habit - To prevent prediabetes, some improvements can also be made in your diet, such as eating healthy food, eating outside or taking snacks like dry fruits instead of fried foods. Include foods with high fiber and other nutrients in the diet.
Stop alcohol and cigarette - reduce the consumption of alcohol as much as possible and also stop smoking. You can also contact a doctor or an expert to quit these habits.
