Disease-Which People Have Anemia The Most And Why?

Anemia is such a blood disorder, which is very serious, but if it is taken care of in time, then the situation does not become serious. The cases of anemia are increasing continuously in our country and this is usually happening due to poor lifestyle and lack of proper diet. Everyone needs to be careful amidst its increasing danger, but it is also very important to know who are more at risk of anemia. We spoke to Dr. Amrita Chakraborty, Consultant, Hematology, Hemato-Oncology and Bone Marrow Transplant Expert at Max Super Specialty Hospital, Shalimar, Delhi, to get her expert opinion on the same. Dr. Amrita gave some important information related to the development of anemia. How does anemia occur? According to Dr. Amrita, anemia is a condition in which there is a deficiency of red blood cells (RBC) in the blood. The main function of RBC ie Red Blood Cells is to deliver oxygen to all the organs and tissues of the body. The doctor explained that anemia can usually occur in our body in three different ways. In which the first is lack of blood, the second is the stop of making blood or RBC and the third is the destruction of RBC due to some reason. 1. Anemia caused by anemia - This type of anemia usually occurs in women of reproductive age, because their body loses a lot of blood during menstruation. Second, even after the age of postmenopausal women, there can be anemia due to blood loss. 2. Reduced blood or RBC formation - This type of anemia can usually occur due to deficiency of iron, vitamin B12 and folic acid in the body. Especially in pregnant women, the risk of iron deficiency is high and this is because during this time the need of iron in the body of women increases and it is not fulfilled. Vitamin B12 deficiency is commonly found in vegetarians and vegans. This is because vitamin B12 is found only in animal source foods. 3. RBC Destruction - When red blood cells start getting destroyed due to some reason inside the body, it also causes anemia. This can usually be due to an autoimmune disease, viral infection or taking some type of medicine. Also there are some types of cancer, which can destroy the red blood cells in the body. Who is at risk of anemia According to Dr. Amrita, women who are of reproductive age, children who are malnourished, women who are continuously pregnant and vegetarians and vegans are the groups who are most at risk of anemia. Apart from this, there are some other hematological disorders (diseases related to blood), which can increase the risk of anemia and these include myelodysplastic syndrome, aplastic anemia and blood cancer etc. Also, some chronic diseases such as chronic kidney disease, gastrointestinal diseases and arthritis are diseases that increase the risk of anemia. Certain congenital diseases such as thalassemia, sickle cell disease or certain bone marrow disorders or syndromes also increase the risk of developing anemia. People who already have a problem with anemia in their family or have already had it, then the risk of getting this disease also increases.
