The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in partnership with National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) just recently announced a new UPI 123Pay initiative to make it easier for “40 crore” feature phone users to complete the digital payments process without an internet connection.

How to set up offline UPI payment To set up offline UPI payment, you have to dial *99# from your phone. You have to dial it from the same number which is linked to your bank account or else this service will not work. After this, set the language and select the bank name. You will see all the bank accounts linked to your number. For this reason, select the option of the bank to which you want to link. Then you have to enter the last 6 digit of the debit card along with the expiry date. After setting it up, you can make UPI payments without any internet connection. After that enter 1 to send money.After this you give *99# UPI ID, phone number or bank account details on which you want to transfer money. After this you have to give UPI PIN. You will complete the payment. At present, the upper transaction limit in this is Rs 5,000. This is why NPCI will only allow offline transactions upto Rs 200. In phase 1, UPI lite will process transactions in offline mode(debit offline and credit online). At a later point, UPI Lite will process transactions in complete offline mode i e debit and credit both offline.
